When a death occurs, the order in which things need to be done depends on where the death occurred.
If the death occurs at home, and the individual is under Hospice, call the hospice nurse first. They will make the necessary calls to all proper authorities then the Funeral Home will be called.
If the death occurs at home and not under Hospice the police will need to be notified prior to the deceased being removed from the residence, they make necessary calls to proper authorities.
If the death occurs in a hospital, nursing home or assisted living facility the institution will notify family first then call the funeral home. The family should also call the funeral home in case there are any questions that need to be addressed. If death occurs in the middle, of the night, one of the directors will call the family the next morning, in order to give family members time to rest prior to setting up times to meet and go over details in person.
When meeting with the director there will be a list of things that should be brought.
1. Full name of deceased
2. Home Address, city state, zip code
3. Social Security Number
4. Date of Birth
5. Place of Birth: City and State
6. Father's Name: whether living or deceased
7. Mother's Name: Maiden name, whether living or deceased
8. If deceased is a Veteran discharge papers (DD214)
9. Highest level of education
10. Occupation and type of Industry
11. Place of burial if burial is choice of service.
12. If burial clothing
13. Name of legal next of kin: (Husband, children, brothers, sisters)
